Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report early analysis indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism made him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
