Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
