The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
